What is Root Canal Treatment
Every tooth contains a soft inner tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When decay, a deep filling, a crack or trauma allows bacteria to reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. Left untreated, the infection can spread into the surrounding bone and lead to an abscess.
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, removes the inflamed or infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals inside the tooth roots, then seals them to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
The natural tooth is retained, although it will usually need a permanent restoration afterwards to protect it and restore its function.
What Happens During Root Canal Treatment
Treatment is usually completed over one or more appointments depending on the tooth and the extent of the infection.
Assessment and Diagnosis
We start with a thorough examination, testing of the tooth and digital X-rays. Where more detail is needed, our in-house Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scanner can provide a detailed 3D view of the root anatomy and surrounding bone. This can be particularly useful when the anatomy is complex or the diagnosis is uncertain. Once we understand the problem, we will explain our findings and discuss the available treatment options with you.
Cleaning the Canals
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic and isolated to keep the area clean and dry. The infected or inflamed pulp is removed and the canals are shaped, cleaned and disinfected. In some cases, a medicated dressing and temporary filling are placed while the infection settles.
Filing and Sealing
Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth.
Restoring the Tooth
A tooth that has had root canal treatment can be more vulnerable to fracture than a healthy tooth, particularly back teeth that are exposed to heavy chewing forces. A dental crown or another permanent restoration may be recommended to protect the tooth and restore its function.
If a Previous Root Canal Has Failed
Root canal treatment is not always successful the first time. If a previous treatment has failed, it may be possible to repeat the treatment, or to carry out a surgical procedure that seals the end of the tooth root so the tooth can be retained. Before any re-treatment, we assess the tooth carefully to confirm it is restorable and has a good prognosis. If it is not, we will tell you honestly and talk through the alternatives. For more complex cases, we have access to an operating microscope. The increased magnification and illumination helps us locate difficult canals, identify fractures and work with greater precision, which can make the difference in cases that would otherwise be hard to treat.
Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?
Root canal treatment has an old reputation that modern dentistry has largely left behind. With effective local anaesthetic, most patients find the appointment feels similar to having a filling. For many, the treatment brings significant relief because it removes the source of the pain.
