What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are restorations that cap or cover broken, worn, damaged or discoloured teeth.

They are frequently made from highly aesthetic and durable ceramic materials, though there is still a place for more traditional metal-ceramic or even gold restorations. Crowns are used to improve the strength and appearance of your teeth helping you maintain healthy, functional teeth and a pleasing smile for years to come. Why Would I Need Dental Crowns Rather Than a Filling?

At Restore Dental & Prosthodontics , we believe in minimally invasive dentistry so, where possible, we will opt for the most conservative option that achieves your goals and maintains the integrity of your tooth. Tooth coloured resin fillings offer excellent results in small-medium sized cavities. However, where destruction of the tooth is more extensive or the structure is significantly weakened or discoloured, a partial or full coverage crown may give the best long-term results. Dental crowns tend to be stronger and more durable than resin and may provide improved protection, particularly in root filled posterior teeth.

Types of Dental Crowns

Different crown materials may be recommended depending on the location of the tooth, your bite, aesthetic goals and functional requirements.

Ceramic Dental Crowns

All-ceramic crowns are highly aesthetic and metal-free, making them a popular choice for front and visible teeth. They provide excellent translucency and can closely resemble natural enamel. In many situations using ceramic crowns preparation techniques can be more conservative of tooth structure compared to traditional treatment approaches.

Gold Crowns

Although less common today, gold crowns can still be an excellent option in selected cases, particularly for back teeth where durability and minimal tooth reduction are priorities.

Metal-Ceramic Crowns

Metal-ceramic crowns combine a metal substructure with tooth-coloured porcelain. In some clinical situations, these crowns may still offer advantages in durability and function.

What Is the Dental Crown Process?

1. Consultation and Assessment

Your appointment begins with a comprehensive examination of your teeth, gums and bite. Digital imaging and photographs may be taken to assess the tooth and determine whether a crown is appropriate.

2. Tooth Preparation

The tooth is carefully shaped to create space for the crown while preserving as much healthy structure as possible.

3. Digital Scans or Impressions

Precise digital scans or impressions are taken so your custom crown can be fabricated by a skilled dental technician.

4. Temporary Crown

We will put a temporary crown in place while your final restoration is being made.

5. Crown Placement

Once complete, your dental crown is checked for fit, bite, comfort and appearance before being securely bonded into place.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

The lifespan of a dental crown depends on several factors including oral hygiene, bite forces, diet and whether teeth grinding or clenching is present. A crown is only as good as the tooth that is supporting it.

Many ceramic crowns may last 10–15 years or longer when properly maintained. Regular dental examinations and professional cleans are important for monitoring the crown and surrounding teeth.

If you clench or grind your teeth, we may recommend a custom night guard to help protect both your crowns and natural teeth.

How To Care For Dental Crowns

Dental crowns should be cared for like natural teeth.

We recommend:

  • Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Cleaning between teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes
  • Attending regular dental examinations and cleans
  • Avoiding chewing hard objects such as ice
  • Wearing a night guard if recommended

Good maintenance plays an important role in the longevity of your dental crowns and overall oral health.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are restorations used to replace a missing tooth or teeth.

Conventionally, one tooth on each side of the gap is prepared. Just as with crowns, dental bridges are constructed from ceramic or metal-ceramic materials and bonded in place. The false tooth is therefore supported by crowns fixed to its neighbouring teeth. In some situations, an ‘adhesive bridge’ can be used. This reduces the need for preparation of adjacent teeth and relies on a ‘wing’ of ceramic or metal bonded to the adjacent tooth with a high strength resin.

We use dental bridges and dental crowns north Brisbane custom made by skilled local technicians who work closely with your dentist or prosthodontist to achieve optimal results.

How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?

While the strength of the underlying teeth and your home maintenance will have a significant impact on longevity, clinical evidence and experience indicate that the average lifespan of ceramic restorations such as fixed crowns and bridges is 10-15 years. Adhesive bridges tend to have a slightly shorter lifespan, but the compensation is that the underlying tooth structure has undergone minimal preparation. We will advise you on care of your ceramic restorations and recommend regular visits with your dentist and hygienist to maintain good oral health, particularly after crown and bridgework. If you have worn your teeth significantly through clenching and grinding (sometimes known as bruxism) we may recommend a night guard or occlusal splint to protect your ceramic restorations and remaining teeth from ongoing chipping and wear.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry

General dentistry refers to dental care that is used to prevent, diagnose, and treat common dental problems. This includes regular check-ups, teeth cleaning, fillings and diagnosing and treating gum disease.

We recommend seeing a dentist every six months or at least once a year. This is to ensure your oral health is maintained and that small problems don’t turn into larger ones – which can end up being painful and costly in the long run. Catching problems early allows us to create a dental treatment plan, that can quickly solve problems before they become severe. Contact our Chermside Family Dentist today for a check-up.

Dental issues can be presented in many different ways, but the most common symptoms are pain, discomfort, cracked teeth, bleeding from gums, or bad breath. If you experience any of these symptoms, we recommend getting in touch with a dentist as soon as possible.

Metal fillings were popular for quite many years and do still have a place in some circumstances. While they are durable, many people find silver amalgam fillings unsightly – and they can leave weakened teeth unsupported.  If you’re unhappy with how your metal fillings look, our Chermside family dental team can replace them with a composite resin that closely matches the colour of your teeth.

At Restore Dental, we aim to offer general dentistry treatment that’s as painless as possible, using gentle techniques and a soothing atmosphere. We take the time to explain the procedure and communicate with patients every step of the way. If you suffer from anxiety or are apprehensive about the procedure, we will discuss options for managing your concerns. Dr Davies has a particular interest in helping anxious patients through dental treatment.
