Child Dental Benefits Schedule
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a government-funded system that provides financial assistance to eligible children for basic dental services. Child Dental Benefits Schedule Eligibility Criteria
You don’t need to apply or register your child for CDBS, eligible families are sent a letter from the Australian Government informing them. If you are still unsure, or haven’t received a letter, the following criteria outlines CDBS eligibility further.
- The child must be eligible for Medicare
- They are between the age of 0 and 17 for at least one day of the calendar year
- You or they get an eligible payment from the Australian Government once a year
Centrelink Payments That Allow Access
A key criterion for eligibility is receiving an approved Centrelink payment at least once a year. These payments can be for the guardian or child, and a list of eligible payments can be found on Services Australia.
What Services Are Covered?
Your child could be covered for up to $1,095 over two consecutive years for basic dental services under the CDBS. Restrictions may apply to certain basic dental services. It is best to check with your dentist if there are any restrictions before starting your service.
Services covered under the CDBS:
- Check-ups
- Cleaning
- Extractions
- Fillings
- Fissure sealing
- Root canals
- X-rays
Using Services Under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule
Child dental benefits are available at most dentists. When you book an appointment, tell the dentist you would like to use the CDBS. You can then check how close you are to the cap; this will tell you the benefit amount you can get. You don’t need to bring your CDBS eligibility letter into the dentist, they can check eligibility and available benefit amount at the appointment.
When at the appointment it is best to ask what each service will cost, and if CDBS will cover the services. You should get a consent form to sign, agreeing to the services and what they cost. If you dentist bulk bills you won’t need to pay or claim. If they don’t, you may need to pay on the day of the service and claim it back through Medicare.
How You Can Claim Child Dental Benefits Schedule
It is important to know that you can’t claim CDBS and private health for the same dental service. As stated above if your dentist doesn’t bulk bill you will have to claim the benefit yourself. If your dentist doesn’t claim on your behalf, head over to Medicare’s online services to lodge a claim.
