What are Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers are a very thin layer of material bonded to the front of your teeth that can significantly improve the appearance of your teeth and smile. Veneers can be made from two different types of material; porcelain and composite. They both are excellent for treating chipped, discoloured, slightly misaligned or misshapen teeth, or to fill small gaps between the front teeth. Both porcelain and composite veneers are individually designed, to suit your desired aesthetic result and can be indistinguishable from real teeth.

Composite Veneers

Composite Veneers are made from composite resin, which is a tooth-coloured material that is also commonly used for fillings. It comes in a wide variety of shades allowing your practitioner to perfectly match your own natural teeth or alternately to improve the colour of your teeth depending on your desired result.

Planning is an essential part in achieving your anticipated outcome. You will first require a consultation appointment to discuss your expectations and to design an individualised treatment plan. One of the benefits in choosing composite resin is the much shorter time frame, in a typical case a patient can have this treatment completed in one day as opposed to porcelain veneers which are hand crafted by a local laboratory technician and require multiple appointments.

Composite veneers are an affordable option in restoring your smile. Composite veneers are not as strong and resilient as porcelain veneers and they can chip or stain over time. Composite veneers have been proven to last many years, however, whilst we only offer the best materials available, even the highest quality veneers will eventually require replacement.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers provide the highest quality restorative option and offer the best aesthetics and longest lifetime. This material offers a superior natural colour and shine and are stain resistant due to porcelains’ non-porous nature.

The journey to restoring your smile with porcelain requires multiple appointments and planning is once again the most essential part in achieving your dream smile. You will first attend for a consultation to discuss your expectations. Your practitioner will likely take some impressions and photographs of your teeth at this appointment to first design the anticipated outcome. Treatment is carried out over a few appointments. Firstly, to prepare your teeth and collect records for the veneers to be hand crafted at our local expert laboratory. In most cases, we will recommend you attend a “Try-in” appointment where we try the veneers in before committing to permanent cementation. This allows you and your Dentist the opportunity to make any required changes. Once all parties are happy with the design, the final appointment is to permanently bond the porcelain veneers; cemented on by your Dentist.

It is important to note that whilst you wait for your veneers to be constructed you will have a temporarily fixed solution. These are generally made of a tooth-like plastic material that provides the illusion of your real teeth.

Ongoing Maintenance

Repairs and replacements are inevitable for all treatment options and the lifetime of any dental treatment can vary greatly between individuals. Some factors that can affect the life expectancy of your veneers are chewing forces, diet, hygiene, and maintenance. Veneers are not suitable for everyone and your dentist at Restore will advise you if this type treatment is the right option for you to consider.

Here at Restore Dental we don’t only place your dental veneers, but we also help you to care for them. By providing our patients with on-going maintenance, review appointments and access to regular preventative care our goal is to ensure that your veneers retain their aesthetic and functional qualities for as long as possible.
